What we have now is not the traditional way of doing missions, such as when we lived in Africa. We sometimes call it modern missions. But, in a way, it is ancient missions. It is what Paul referred to when he talked about the body of Christ and each person having their own role in the Kingdom. When he called people who had supported him in his mission work ‘partners’ in the gospel. When he wrote to churches, even some he’d never been to, and asked for support. When he travelled from church to church strategically to strengthen them, to encourage them when they faced opposition, heresy and persecution. When John described supporting ministers and missionaries as ‘worthy of God’ or a Godly sort of work (3 John 6).
You are a part of this. Any gifts help us to visit a missionary who is on the verge of giving up. Will mean we can take some church planters out for coffee and encourage them, give them ideas and talk through their leadership challenges. Will help us put on a training event for isolated church leaders. Will mean that in countries around the world where we do not have the cultural insight to evangelise, we can still help the gospel to be spread and lives changed: ‘until the whole world hears’.
